August 2006

Greetings from South Africa:

The past six weeks have absolutely flown by. I cannot believe how much God has stretched me, even in such a short period of time. I have experienced good times and bad times, but God has been faithful, through it all. I would like to share with you a little of what I have experienced, since I arrived...

As most of you know, my mom flew to South Africa with me and was able to stay for two weeks. It was great to be able to show my mom where I will be living, what I will be doing, and who I will be working with. Not only that, but it was wonderful to be able to create some lifelong memories with her. While she was here, we were able to visit some village churches, spend time with the African people, have dinner with David & Erin deBruyn, go on an African safari (complete with lions!), and simply participate in normal daily activities together. I will always hold dear those precious moments with my mom.

Soon after my mom left, Kevin & Sarah Zakariasen left to take a group of five young adults into Mozambique. This allowed me the opportunity to act as "Mom" to the seven Zakariasen children, for a period of nine days. While everything went well, I found it to be a huge stretching experience, through which God continuously revealed Himself to me. As soon as Kevin & Sarah returned from their time in Mozambique, it was my turn to go into Mozambique. At first, I was very hesitant about going into Mozambique. However, God worked in my life in many ways, and I actually found my 12-day trip to Mozambique to be very refreshing - spiritually, physically, and mentally.

Since my arrival in South Africa, I have had the privilege of experiencing many different things, and I look forward to experiencing many more. In mid-August, I will be traveling with the Zakariasen family to Zambia. Kevin has been asked to speak at a youth conference, and has decided to take the whole family along. Also, I have been asked to be a girl's counselor at the camp. It is very exciting that God is giving me this door of opportunity, especially since I was able to work with the youth group at home for the past four years. I would appreciate your prayers, as I seek to share God's love with the youth in Zambia.

I look forward to seeing how God will continue to work, as I allow myself to be clay in His hands. Though at times it is hard, I truly desire to be stretched and molded into an image that reflects Jesus Christ. Thank you all for your prayers and notes of encouragement. God has used you to be a blessing in my life.

Serving the Lord in South Africa,

Krista Smith
